Marlinspike, riggers straight marlinspike/iron fid
Riggers straight iron marlinspike or iron fid. Recovered from the Thames foreshore at Custom House Quay. A marlinspike was used by riggers to open out the strands of rope for splicing. Rope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two ropes or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands.
