Port & River — 1951-1975
Public asiatic type
Wooden sign painted black with white lettering reading 'PUBLIC ASIATIC TYPE'. The sign hung in pubic toilets at the Royal Albert Dock in North Woolwich. It indicates an Asian style toilet. Separate toilet facilities were available for the use of Asian sailors, called lascars. They sometimes had to stay for several months in London between arriving on a ship from India and embarking on the return voyage.
