Amphora, Dressel 20 amphora
Upper part of a globular amphora (form Dressel 20) in buff fabric, with the stamp '...ENIHISPSAE'.
The amphora was used to export olive oil from Baetica, a Roman province in what is now southern Spain. It was made in one of the many potters' workshops in the Guadalquivir vally, the centre of the olive oil trade. The stamp is complex and several suggestions of its meaning have been made: 'produced by Hispanus Saenus at a plage beginning Cen...'; 'produced by someone with initials CEN at Saenum'; the Roman name for Sevile was 'Hispalis' so perhaps this town is included in the stamp.
