Coin, nummus
A copper alloy nummus of Constantius II. Constantius II was raised to the rank of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Emperor Constantine, in AD 324. Following his father’s death in AD 337, he became co-emperor alongside his brothers, Constantine II and Constans. He became sole emperor in AD 350 and ruled until his own death in AD 361. The back of the coin depicts a fallen horseman. This coin was minted in Arelate (modern day Arles, France), AD 353-355.
Obv: Cuirassed and laureate bust of Constantius II, facing right. Obv inscription: FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C. Rev: A soldier, standing left, spearing a fallen horseman, extending his left arm in defence. Rev inscription: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, D in field l, TCON in exergue.
