Archaeology — Middle Saxon; late 8th-mid-9th century
Animal remains, antler, sword hilt
Half of a lower sword hilt guard made from antler. It is in elliptical form and has two flat faces. There is a slot for the tang of the sword. The sides are decorated with six incised bands of triangular notches between parallel lines. Anglo-Saxon swords were often fitted with hilts made of bone, antler or even wood. The hilts had guards to protect the hand. An upper hilt guard (ROP95[967]<9>) was found on the same site and is possibly part of the same sword.
