Printed Ephemera — 1842
Chinese Collection
Handbill announcing the Chinese Collection Exhibition at St George's Place, Hyde Park Corner. It carries an illustration of a pagoda. The organiser, Nathan Dunn, spent a number of years as a merchant in Canton, where he collected Chinese artefacts. He exhibited them in a hall whose entrance was a replica pagoda. The reviews cited on this handbill call the exhibition 'a complete illustration of the manners, customs, and, in many respects, of the history and religion of an immense empire, but imperfectly known to Europeans'. It also refers to distinguished visitors such as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
