Wall plaster
A fragment of painted wall plaster. The upper section consists of a band of red background with stylised floral/vegetal ornamentation, possibly in yellow-white, gold. Below this are two horizontal white bands, the lower section depicts the upper section of a scene containing a male and female figure, set on a blue/green background.
Painted walls were an essential part of Roman decor. It was the quality of the work that indicated the money spent on it. Designs for the wall paintings changed with fashion and depended on the skill of the master painter and his team.
