Printed Ephemera — 1850
Menu card
A menu card for a banquet held at Mansion House by the Right Hon. Thomas Farncomb, Lord Mayor, in honour of Prince Albert. It was held on Thursday 21 March 1850 and aimed to promote the idea and concept of the 'The Exhibition of All Nations', which became known as the Great Exhibition and was to be held the following year in Hyde Park. Prince Albert gave a speech in which he said that the exhibition was to give a 'true test and living picture of the point of development at which the whole of mankind' had reached and 'a new starting-point from which all nations will be able to direct their further exertions'.
The menu card is printed on embossed paper with gilt decoration. Birch and Birch were the banquet's caterers. It lists all the dishes for the first course, removes, dessert and ices.
