The interior of a cloth merchants
A merchant, probably a linen draper, is shown sitting at a desk on the left. With a quill in one hand, he gestures towards some fabric with the other. A porter holds a bale of cloth out for inspection while two clients stand behind him by rolls of fabric. One of them is holding a tally stick and calling out measurements. On the right, next door to the cloth merchant's shop, three men can be seen sampling wine and admiring the contents of a Dutch glass over a barrel. The contrast between the two groups may serve, by comparison, to highlight the hard-work ethic of the unknown cloth merchant depicted.
