Coin, sestertius
A copper alloy sestertius coin of Commodus. Commodus ruled as co-emperor alongside his father, Marcus Aurelius, AD 177-180. Following his father’s death in AD 180, Commodus became sole ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 180-192. The back of the coin depicts Providentia, the female personification of foreseeing. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 181.
Obv: Laureate head of Commodus, facing right. Obv inscription: M COMMODVS ANTONINVS AVG. Rev: Providentia, standing front, head left, holding a wand over a globe with her right hand and holding a vertical sceptre in the left. Rev inscription: PROV DEOR TR P VI IMP [IIII COS III PP], SC in field.
