A copper alloy as coin of Commodus. Commodus ruled as co-emperor alongside his father, Marcus Aurelius, AD 177-180. Following his father’s death in AD 180, Commodus became sole ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 180-192. The back of the coin depicts Commodus. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 177-178.
Obv: Laureate bust of Commodus, facing right, left shoulder draped. Obv inscription: [L AVREL] COMMODVS AVG. Rev: Commodus, veiled and togate, standing left, sacrificing over a tripod. Rev inscription: VOTA PVBLICA [TR P III IMP II] COS PP, SC in field.
