Shoe

Adult left foot ankle shoe with a one-piece upper and a one-piece sole; the sole continues in a V up the back of the heel. The upper and sole are attached to each other by a leather thong. The seam in the inner side of the upper was thread stitched. The shoe is fastened by a single flap over the front of the foot/ankle that would have fastened with two toggles. Both toggles are now missing but the slots for them remain. There is stitching for a top band. There is a faint impressed decorative double line up the front of the vamp. This form of shoe has been found in York dating to the 10th century and in London dating to the early 11th century.
