Shirt
Union Jack printed cotton man's shirt, 1966-7, Purchased from I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet.
I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet, which was owned by Ian Fisk, made a speciality of second hand regimental uniforms Customers included Jimi Hendrix. The original shop was located in Portobello Road. The scarlet guardsmen's tunics, which hung on rails on the pavement outside the shop, and Union Jack shirts, offered a theatrical and subversive alternative to mainstream fashionable dress. Fisk's business thrived and he soon opened Lord Kitchener branches in Soho and Chelsea, which were both key areas for small, independent boutiques.
The owner of this shirt later recalled that it was 'hard to remember what one wore...At a guess I'd say - flared jeans! the flares would, of course, be triangles of contrasting material sewn into the seam by me'.
