Social History — 1950-1959
Concrete sample
This concrete core sample was recovered from the Ronan Point residential tower block, Custom House, after its demolition in 1986. The 23-storey block of flats was built by Newham council and opened in spring 1968. Just a few months later, at 5.45am on 16 May, an explosion caused the collapse of one corner of the tower block resulting in the deaths of five people and the injury of 17. A gas leak from a cooker in flat 90 had trigged the explosion, and this led to a ban on gas appliances in tower blocks.
