Fire mark
Fire marks were placed on the outside of buildings to indicate that the property was insured by a specific company. This mark was issued by the West of England Fire and Life Insurance Company which was founded at Exeter in 1807. In 1828 the company opened a London office at 20 New Bridge Road, Blackfriars. A fire brigade was established and stationed at the corner of Cornwall Road and Stamford Street, Blackfriars. The company was taken over by Commercial Union un 1894. This mark features the company emblem, King Alfred of Wessex.
