Figure, trade figure
This carved and painted wooden 'Turkoman' trade figure was probably placed just inside the entrance to a grocery store. Such figures dressed in eastern style clothing were used from the 18th century as advertising to indicate that Turkish coffee was available within the store. The figure is one of a pair from the same source - the other being a trade figure of a Chinaman advertising Chinese tea.
