Decorative arts — 1781
Badge
A scholar of Christ's Hospital Mathematical School would have worn this metal badge as part of their school uniform. The central panel features an allegorical figure of 'Commerce' (or possibly Britannia) standing with a spear in her right hand. At her feet a crate and a bale of goods representing trade and behind her sailing ships.
Around the border is inscribed "PROSPERITAS NAVIBUS MAGNAE BRITANNIAE' (Prosperity to the Navigation of Great Britain) and "EX MUNIFICENTIA I STOCK ARM 1781" (Out of generosity I am supplied?) The term 'Navigation' was used in the 18th century when referring to all maritime trade.
Similarly to other charitable Schools in London, Christ's Hospital trained young men in navigation and other related skills to prepare them for a career at sea.
Around the edge of the badge are pierced small holes, allowing for the badge to be stitched to clothing.
