Working History — 1817-1870
Drill bit, centre drill bit
This centre drill bit forms part of a group of tools contained in a fine early 19th century toolchest. Many of the tools are marked 'W Gray'. The drill bit was made by David Flather & Sons of the Solly Works, Sheffield and a possible owner's mark 'Sutclife'' has been scratched on to one of its sides. It was perhaps not one of the original compliment of tools in the chest. Centre drill bits attached to a brace were used to bore wide shallow holes.
