Decorative arts — C. 1740-1770
Chatelaine, etui
This chatelaine and etui is made from pinchbeck (an alloy of copper and zinc designed to resemble gold), and inlaid with slices of bloodstone, a form of chalcedony recognisable by its red flecks. Chatelaines were carried about the person, and designed to carry small items such as watches. Etuis generally contained small personal items. This example still contains its scissors, knife, pencil and two small cases, possibly for pins.
