Pendant, amulet
A silver pendant in the form of a hand, clutching a crowned heart. Hand motifs in jewellery have a variety of meanings. Rings showing a pair of clasped hands, known as fede rings, were popular symbols of fidelity in Italy from the medieval period. A similar motif was used in Ireland, with the pair of hands clasping a crowned heart; known as a claddagh. This solitary hand may be a love gift, offering a heart to the recipient. It might also be an amulet or charm, designed to ward off bad luck in the form of the 'evil eye'.
