Silver stock buckle. It has an engraved rectangular frame with three pronged tongue and four fastening tabs engraved: 'R' and 'L'. It is stamped with the initials ‘IS’ for James Sutton and ‘IB’ for Joseph Butt (mark registered in 1782). The buckle was attached by means of worked stud-holes to one of the shaped ends at the back of the stiffened and made-up stock. The other end was pulled through the buckle and secured closely to the neck. In the 1770's and the 1780's both coat and waistcoat were collarless, which meant that the decorated buckle was visible. Later, when the coat was finished with a collar high at the back a plain standard buckle was permanently fixed on to each stock.
