Decorative arts — C. 1780
Buckle, stock buckle
Silver stock buckle. It has an oval frame engraved with four rosettes and a triple pronged tongue with three fastening tabs. It is marked twice with the initials ‘IS’ for ‘Joseph Savory’, whose mark was registered in 1772.
The buckle was attached by means of worked stud-holes to one of the shaped ends at the back of the stiffened and made-up stock. The other end was pulled through the buckle and secured closely to the neck. In the 1770's and the 1780's both coat and waistcoat were collarless, which meant that the decorated buckle was visible. Later, when the coat was finished with a collar high at the back a plain standard buckle was permanently fixed on to each stock.
