This wooden wheelbarrow was discovered in Snow Hill tunnel, Holborn. It is a reminder of the work done by thousands of manual labourers or ‘navvies’ who dug tunnels and built embankments, roads and railways in the capital. Snow Hill tunnel opened in 1871 and linked the London, Chatham & Dover Railway to the Metropolitan Railway’s station at Moorgate. The station closed in 1916, but the tunnel is still used by Thameslink services.
