Social History — 1920-1930
Tin, crisp tin
Tin used as packaging for Smith's potato crisps. Smith's Crisps were first made in 1920 by Frank Smith in a Cricklewood, North London garage and delivered using a pony and trap. Within a year he was employing 12 people and had to move to larger premises. Although crisps were an American 'invention', Frank Smith was the first to make them for a mass market using factory production methods. The firm expanded rapidly and by the late 1920s had a newly built factory and head office located along the Great West Road.
