Social History — 1800-1805
Trunk
Wooden trunk covered with hairskin with iron fittings, c.1804. It was made by William Hall of Judd Street, Brunswick Square in Bloomsbury. The trunk was donated to the Museum. It was made for a young French émigré who had stayed with the family of the donor in London around 1800. The Frenchman spent 8 years in exile before returning to France. The French Revolution in 1789 caused thousands of French aristocrats to flee in fear of being guillotined, and many came to London.
