Archaeology — Roman
Seed, walnut shell
These are Roman walnut shells, discovered by archaeologists at New Fresh Wharf in the city. They are broken, because someone had cracked them open to eat the nut inside. These nuts would have been expensive to buy, because they would have had to be brought to London from Europe, perhaps France, Spain or Italy.
