Working History — C. 1845
Revolver, percussion revolver
This is one of a pair of six-barrelled percussion 'pepperbox' revolvers. When the trigger is pulled the barrel turns simultaneously raising the hammer. The hammer then falls onto the explosive cap covering the nipple. The spark passes through the hole in the nipple igniting the charge in the barrel which fires the bullet. In the 1850s revolvers of this type were replaced by single-barrelled revolvers which could be loaded with paper cartridges of ball and powder.
