Working History — 1790-1810
Pistol, flintlock pistol
This flintlock pistol was carried by a Customs Officer for protection. Working as a Customs official was dangerous in this period owing to the activities of armed smuggling gangs. Brass-barrelled pistols were favoured by coachmen and other travellers because they were more resistant to rust.
The maker of this pistol, Thomas Barnett, was a government contractor who had a workshop in the Minories near the Tower of London. He manufactured weapons for both the Board of Ordnance at the Tower and the East India Company.
