Working History — C. 1770
Pistol, pocket pistol
Pocket pistols were carried for personal protection because they could be secreted easily in an overcoat pocket. This pistol is fitted with a retractable trigger which extends when the gun is cocked.
The pistol's maker, John Bennett, had a gunmaking business in the City of London. On his trade card the shop was advertised as being 'at the Cross Daggers, No. 67 Threadneedle Street opposite the North Gate of ye Royal Exchange'.
