Printed Ephemera — 1873-05-26
Paddington Cemetery
New municipal cemeteries were created after the Metropolitan Interment Act of 1852. The old burial grounds in the built area of central London were full and the only solution was to move interment out to the edge of the city. One of the first to be laid out was Paddington Cemetery, of 24 acres in extent, situated adjacent to Willesden Lane in Kilburn. The cemetery is today owned by the London Borough of Brent.
The invoice, dated 26 May 1873, records the burial of Thomas Foster, formerly of 10 Somer's Mews, Southwick Street. As a standard form for different types of burials, it specifies a range of possible plots that could be purchased. There was a 'first ground' and a 'second ground' available divided into areas allocated to parishioners and non-parishioners. The grave was dug to an extra depth of nine feet for a charge of four shillings.
