R.Ackermann, Publisher, Printseller, Colour Manufacturer
Copper-engraved trade card publicising the business of Rudolph Ackermann, publisher, printseller and watercolour manufacturer located at 101 The Strand. The decorative engraving depicts views of London landmarks including St Paul's and the River Thames flanked by two cherubs.
Born in Saxony, Germany Rudolph Ackermann established a copper lithographic printing business, watercolour manufactory and drawing school at 101 The Strand in 1797. Known as the Repository of Arts, the premises were a fashionable venue for art students and others until 1827 when the business moved to 96 The Strand. Between 1809 and 1829 Ackermann promoted his business through his periodical the Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions which featured literature, politics, fashions, commerce and costume plates.
