Printed Ephemera — 1827-1830
R. Ackermann Repository of Arts
Embossed trade card publicising the publishing and printing business of Rudolph Ackermann located at the Repository of Arts, 96 The Strand. The copper-engraved name and address printed on a lithographic press is surrounded by a white embossed cartouche lavishly decorated with cherubs and the Royal Coat of Arms.
Born in Saxony, Germany Rudolph Ackermann established a copper lithographic printing business, watercolour manufactory and drawing school originally at 96 The Strand in 1795 and then at 101 The Strand in 1797. This card probably dates from about 1827 when the Repository of Arts, as Ackermann's premises became known returned to 96 The Strand where the business remained until 1856. Between 1809 and 1829 Ackermann promoted his business through his periodical the Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions which featured literature, politics, fashions, commerce and costume plates.
