Such wrappers were also used to promote businesses as well as having a practical use. Until the abolition of import duties on tea in 1784, tea was expensive and often purchased from grocery stores in small quantities, the loose leaves being wrapped in tea papers such as this example.
The wrapper dates from the period when tea was directly imported into London's East India Dock from China by the East India Company. The Company's monopoly on the importation of tea from China ended in 1834.
