John Richardson, Chymist
Copper-engraved billhead and handwritten invoice issued by the chemist and druggist John Richardson located at the Golden Key, near the Watch House in High Holborn. The billhead is engraved with the tradesman's sign of a large key. Dated 8th July 1769 the invoice refers to the supply of a number of natural remedies including rhubarb, salts and lavender. The engraved and handwritten script is in English round hand. Dried and powdered rhubarb was used widely in the 18th century to treat digestive problems including constipation.
