This was the cover of an ivory tobacco rasp. Rasps were used to grate a solid roll of tobacco into fragments small enough to be smoked or taken as snuff. At this time elephant ivory was imported from Africa to centres like Dieppe in France. Here, it was carved with designs in local workshops and exported. This rasp is decorated with a classical female figure who holds a cornucopia, with a sunflower below her.
