Charles II coronation medal
Medal celebrating the coronation of Charles II in 1661. This medal, engraved by Thomas Simon, bears the inscription: ‘EVERSO MISSUS SCUCCURRERE SECLO XXIII APR 1661’ (meaning ‘Sent to support a fallen age, 23 April, 1661’). It was distributed among the spectators at the coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey. Samuel Pepys saw ‘meddalls flung up and down by my Lord Cornwallis - of silver; but I could not come by any’.
Obverse: Bust of Charles II, facing right, crowned, hair long, in royal ermine robes, collar and George of the Garter; legend: ‘CAROLUS II D G ANG SCO FR ET HI REX’. Very worn and damaged. Reverse: Charles II, facing left, in royal robes, holding the sceptre, is seated on a throne; Peace, hovering over him, places the crown upon his head; legend: ‘EVERSO MISSUS SCUCCURRERE SECLO XXIII APR 1661’. It was engraved by Thomas Simon, and has never been surpassed for minuteness and delicacy of work.
