Baluster measure
A baluster measure of gallon capacity with a carinated rim, flared base, flat lid, fleur-de-lys wedge and double-volute thumbpiece. The swept strap handle has a shield terminal and strut attachment. The flat lid is engraved with concentric circles and bears the punched inscription ‘GREEN AND BRENT’. The small touch in a beaded circle on the rim to the left of the handle of a vertical sword (or dagger) within a horse shoe with the initials ‘I’ and ‘F’ below, is the mark of John Fasson I, London, OP1635, who was free in 1725, opened his shop in 1731 and died in 1769. (Variants of the ‘sword’ and horse shoe motif were used by other members of this pewtering family.) John Fasson I, was a leading maker of baluster measures and a great number have survived.
