Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
Costrel
Large flat bellied costrel with three lug holes and a green glaze, found in Houndsditch, London EC3. Such pots were wheel-thrown as a shallow bowl (resulting here in rilled decoration), then the 'top' is closed. It was then upended and a spout and carrying lugs added. The costrel is the medieval equivalent of a water canteen, and this one has a capacity of 1700 ml. It was made in one of the many small kilns in the Surrey/Hampsire borders in the late 15th century.
