Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; late 14th-15th century
Knife set, knife & sheath
Iron scale tang knife with a wooden handle and a decorated leather sheath. The knife has two tapering facetted wooden scales which form the handle. They are fixed in place by three solid iron rivets. The blade has a straight back and a curved edge and is quite long and narrow. The end cap is missing as is one of the shoulder plates. The sheath is quite damaged; it appears to have a plain back and decorated front. The decoration is in the form of a long vertical panel down the front which is decorated with small stamped circles and possibly other stamped motifs. This is framed by incised lines. There appears to be the remains of a sheath lining. The seam is at the back and has been glued.
