Working History — C. 1745
Pistol, holster pistol
John Bumford was the principal contractor to the East India Company between 1745 and 1773. His business was located at the Sign of the Golden Blunderbuss in the Minories near the Tower of London. This area was home to most of the corporate and military contractors supplying the Board of Ordnance and the big joint stock companies with trading interests in the colonies. Bumford also supplied the Hudson Bay Company at this time.
This flintlock holster pistol was probably manufactured for a private client and was proofed by the Gunmakers' Company. Bumford served as Master of the Company twice in 1751 and 1756. Brass-barrelled pistols of this type were often carried by travellers as they were less likely to rust in the rain.
