Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1994-1995
Half Light
This painting focuses on a section of Britian's longest elevated motorway, the Westway flyover which carries the A40(M) into central London. Taken from Torquay Street and looking south-east, this view shows the motorway near Royal Oak in Paddington and is completely devoid of traffic, people, shops and residential buildings.
Mark Cazalet's painting conveys the energy and dominance of the Westway itself, a mammoth feat of engineering. It seems to crawl along the landscape like a huge undulating concrete caterpillar. The semi-circular Bishop's Bridge can seen through the Westway's supporting pillars.
Much of Cazalet's work is inspired by London and West London in particular.
