Battersea Bridge from the Albert Bridge

One of a series of images by the artist of this scene, this particular painting shows Battersea Bridge and the River Thames at low tide. Just beyond the northern end of the Bridge is the white facade of Lindsay House. Lots Road power station can be seen in the background on the left, along with the entrance to Ransome's Dock.

This stretch of the Thames has since been redeveloped to become Riverside apartments and a cluster of tower blocks on the north bank now dominates the skyline. In this painting the artist has combined a carefully constructed composition with a delicate brown and silvery palette.

Jesse Cast was a portrait and landscape painter who trained at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and at the Slade School of Art. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the New England Art Club during the 1930s and, later, at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
