Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1992
Cyclist
Oliver Bevan (born 1941) observed traffic scenes at Hammersmith in the autumn of 1990. In this image, one of several studies, a young male cyclist looks behind as he moves away from some railings at the kerb. A telephone box and a post box can be seen in the background, as well as pedestrians going about their daily business. The artist has captured a brief and fleeting moment, in keeping with his idea of 'something ... transient being presented as a monument.'
Out of his studies of traffic, the artist created nine large canvasses which were designed to hang closely together in a rectangular block.
