Synagogue, Dukes Place, Houndsditch (imprint)
This print shows a service in progress at the synagogue in Duke's Place, Houndsditch, in the City of London. The building was also known as the Great Synagogue. The men are downstairs, while the women are up in the galleries. The artist has given the congregation stereotyped features, reflecting anti-Jewish prejudice of the time. Ashkenazi Jews established a congregation on this site from 1690, led by Benjamin Levy, a Jew from Hamburg.
