Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1798-03
Farinelli, Cuzzoni and Senesino
This print by Hogarth shows the stage of a theatre, with three leading actors and a child. It has been suggested that the performance is Handel's opera 'Julius Caesar' and that the roles shown are those of Mark Antony, Cleopatra and Caesar. One other possibility is that it represents Handel's 'Ptolomeo'.
Despite the title, there is some doubt as to whether the print depicts Farinelli (Carlo Maria Broschi, 1705-1782) or Gaetano Berenstadt (1687-1734), another popular Italian castrato of the time
