Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1805
Westminster from the South
This view of Westminster Palace and Abbey is taken from Stangate Wharf, south of Westminster Bridge. While passengers are being ferried across the River Thames in a wherry, on the wharf men are busy loading or unloading timber. The composition recalls eighteenth-century views of the river which were very popular in interior decoration schemes for the homes of the wealthy.
Born in Scotland, William Anderson (1757-1837) was a shipwright by trade; he had moved to London by 1787 when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy.
