Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1921-1925
Laggard Leaves
This is a view of the artist's back garden at 19 Queensland Avenue, Merton Park in south London. Much of Harry Bush's output was concerned with the immediate surroundings of his home and he was nicknamed 'the painter of the suburbs'.
Here, Bush focuses on the geometric-shaped houses, seen from the rear of his home. The background is made up of the compact housing development, which is separated from the gardens in the foreground by a wooden fence. A tree with orange leaves and a bare tree in the centre of the composition hints that the season is autumn, turning into winter.
