Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1959
Interior of Burkett's Fish Shop, 114 Brompton Road
This painting celebrates the colours and textures of seafood; the lavish display on the right includes lobsters, scallops, prawns, crayfish, haddock and kippers. In the middle ground on the left is the work area where the fish were prepared. As well as fish, the shop also has pheasants and chickens for sale which, although unusual for a fishmonger, was not unheard of.
The people in the painting are: the shop manager, W.G. Christie (in the foreground); the fishblockman, H. Carini (in the middle ground); the co-owner, Jeremy Angliss (in the middle background); the head clerk, E. R. Worboys (in the background). The majority of these men worked for the firm for over thirty years. The business closed in 1977.
