Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1912
Down the Garden
This is a painting of the artist's back garden in Harrington Square, near Mornington Crescent. Gore was a member of the Camden Town Group, who were committed to depicting everyday subject matter. Here we can see an ordinary London garden with its sheds, casually set aside ladder, higgledy-piggledy plant pots, garden ornaments, cats and a young girl. However, Gore has painted the scene in an experimental way, flattening the perspective by applying bright colours in loose brushstrokes.
