Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1935
View of former Alpine Club and passage from Savile Row leading to Conduit Street
The subject of this painting is the former Alpine Club which moved to South Audley Street in 1937. The passage way from Savile Row which leads to Conduit Street is also depicted. Savile Place and Mill Street can be seen in the background. The artist has focused on the location and the buildings, although a figure can be seen through the passage way, illuminated from behind. A letter box and a bollard in the foreground give a sense of perspective.
Born into an artistic family ( he was the son of Rex Vicat Cole) which also produced paintings of London, John Vicat Cole (1903-75) became a member of the New English Art Club in 1965 and was a stained glass designer, as well as a painter.
